While driving through Virginia during our trip to New York, we came across a sign that stated that the speed of vehicles are monitored by aircraft. My wife and I were both very interested by this. In all the years we drove through Virginia we never recall seeing any aircraft; neither airplane, helicopter, or even a bi-plane. Do they truly monitor our speed? Or is it a sign to put fear and/or doubt so people who be cautious enough to monitor their own speed?
Out of curiosity I researched this on the internet, and it was apparent that they do indeed monitor/enforce speeds using aircraft. In fact, most states use aircraft to help monitor speed. However, only a few states post signs for the very reason to encourage drivers to check their speed in hopes that they will adjust accordingly if necessary.
This is related to what I learned when installing an alarm system; the best deterrent of theft in homes is to have a sign outside indicating that the house was secured and monitored by an alarm system. I even remember over 20 years ago when my dad installed a fake video camera in the stationery store he owned. Afterwards, he posted several signs warning that the store was monitored through a surveillance system.
Regardless of whether the roads, homes, or stores are being monitored, these signs do make a difference. It helps people to pause and consider their actions. It also serves as a warning of potential consequences.
As Christians, do we have any signs to help us monitor our direction? Some wear a cross around their neck as a reminder, others post posters with Scripture, and others memorize Scripture. I personally found recalling God’s Words of truth and love to be best to help in many different occasions. What signs do you have to help you take pause and consider your choices?
Here are a few of my favorite verses (other than Isaiah 40:31) and those I use regularly –
I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. -Philippians 4:13
For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of love and of self-discipline. So do not be ashamed to testify about our Lord, or ashamed of me his prisoner. But join with me in suffering for the gospel, by the power of God, who has saved us and called us to a holy life. -2 Timothy 1:7-9
Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. -1 Thessalonians 5:16-18
For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb . -Psalm 139:13
My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one can snatch them out of my hand. -John 10:27-28
Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love. -1 John 4:7-8
Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path. -Psalm 119:105
