The family spent a few hours at Borders checking out the new books. While we were there we grabbed a few interesting books and magazines. We sat at the coffee shop inside the bookstore. I was surprised to find couches there. Instead of hard chairs and tables to invite people to keep their stay short, they have made it comfortable to enjoy and rest.
So, we decided to rest there and browse through our books. While the kids were enjoying their drinks and checking out books, I started to look around. There were several people just relaxing and doing the same. However, there were a few tables where people have brought their laptops and either studying or researching something. They were serious about their work. It reminded me of students in a library.
Bookstores have changed over the years, and they seem to be catering to this crowd as well. With coffee shops and provision of wireless, it is a great setting to study as well. Don’t want to spill anything or get crumbs over the books, especially if you are not getting it, but it’s better than be stuffy in a library where no food or drinks are allowed.
They just need to include the ability to download books, music, and/or any other resources… wait, the wireless provides for that as well. So why haven’t libraries caught on in providing such services? Ah yes, they want to preserve the conditions of their books. Well, with Google and other companies eager to digitize books, libraries better be quick to change their model or become extinct and only appear in history e-books.
With Google and Amazon Kindle, do you think e-books has a serious future? If so, what is the future for libraries?
